10 years of Service and more appreciated

On Sunday September 5th on the back streets of Downtown Los Angeles, an assembly took place. The Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity (CPHD) returned for its annual event. Ramadan a fasting month for spiritual reflection, improvement and obligated charity. Humanitarian Day has been apart of the Los Angeles Muslim community for the past 10 years. A social network of volunteers, organizations and institutions forms this interfaith coalition. Sharing resources addressing advocacy of homelessness,  its misaddressed policies and most of all the provision of medial, meals and new items for those in need. The CPHD will begin to address America's social ill - homelessness.

Humanitarian Day increased in relationships this year. Strong institutions supported the coalition's efforts with in kind donations, presence and event planning. Existing partners such as Hearts of Mercy, Orange County Islamic Foundation, Islamic Community of Irvine were joined by the Los Angeles Police Department and Macy's Department Stores. Muslim Society of America (MAS Valley) sponsored the long awaited H-Day bags, relationship is what make this event so special. 

In ten years H-Day has always been sponsored from the generosity of the coalition. The Church of Latter Day Saints partnership provides hygiene and schools - medical services are provided by the Umma Community Clinic, makes H-Day health conscience event. Los Angeles alone has 200,000 homeless individuals living below standards. 

Over the past ten years, H-Day has been featured in over 20 cities across America serving 60,000 people with the help of nearly 20,000 volunteers; making Humanitarian not only a tradition, but the largest gathering of Muslims serving humanity in the United States. In 2007 international site were added; Indonesia and Ghana. Both having very different demographics from each other and the United States, but all serving the people with Dignity, Love and Respect.

People Helping People Campaign

In the last 11 years Americans have experienced hardships, downturns, and phobias of all kinds. No one group is untouched by America's domestic issues and current transition. National Unemployment rate is 9.1% (May 2011) and 14.8% (43.6 Million) are uninsured without Health Care.

There is no simple solution in resolving America's issues. "People Helping People" can help revive the hearts of Americans, by Neighbors simply providing Neighborly Needs (Small Kindnesses). The Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity has started a 2012 grassroots and online campaign for awareness of a simple ethic - sincere generosity. We would like to reach out to the American People; who desire to re-iterate negativity and counteract phobias by organizing around simple goodness.

"People Helping People”  is a campaign for communities to embrace humanitarian projects, which target the disadvantaged – the unsheltered, unemployed and the mentally ill. H-Day is a model of Social Empowerment and Economic Development, SEED, which is an ILM division. We are generating active resources for institutionalizing local relief efforts.

The Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity (CPHD) expanded in 2004 initiating its focus on Californian cities such as Downtown LA, Orange County, Long Beach, Fresno and Oakland – where the cities' homeless population appears to be the most impoverished and vulnerable groups in our nation. Humanitarian Day is a wonderful way to organize people and organizations who have been blessed with resources and time to share those blessings with the needy.

“People Helping People” delivers an innate social message for responsibility in the United States. Convert One Day into a Life’s Mission an advocacy not just for homelessness, as well as education and addressing socio-economic policies that divide the people's unity and effectiveness. Procuring resources and ideas such as; revive employment strategies, healthcare needs, the basics, hygienic care and other relevant necessities according to local demographic research.

Note: the "People Helping People" Hygiene Kit, which started in July 2011, has already generated over a 1000 hygiene kits for local relief. This drive is coordinated by the CPHD High School Youth Leaders and New Leadership in Los Angeles and Orange County, empowerment.

2. If you are an institution providing resources and you're seeking an experienced organization to facilitate or grant resources for domestic work, contact us and let's begin the process. The Humanitarian Day Organization is very unique within its thought process. We focus on the service and the people, by remaining sincere and relevant.
3. Help your family, neighbors, co-workers with Small Kindnesses (within your means). Correct your behavior before correcting the next person.
4. Stabilize mental behaviors and physical desires in a paradigm of coordinated discipline and/ or productive respected mannerism; such as Ramadan, the Holidays or Hanukkah - according to your belief or faith that promotes us being a better person (for a year round nature).

2011 Ramadhan Humanitarian Day

Humanitarian Day® (H-Day) is a community service project, which targets the disadvantaged of our society – the unsheltered, unemployed and uninsured. The custodianship of H-Day has been led by the ILM Foundation. H-Day is a model of Social Empowerment and Economic Development SEED, an ILM division. We are generating active resources for institutionalizing local relief efforts since 2000. H-Day campaigns a social message for responsibility in the United States. Convert One Day into a Life’s Mission an advocacy for homelessness, education and the socio-economic division policies. Procuring resources for free items such as; healthcare needs, food, clothing, blankets, toys and other relevant care according to local demographic research.

In the past 10 years the Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity embodies the Muslim community and Interfaith organizations, for the engagement of serving humanity. H-Day has become a bonding force, serving others during the month of Ramadhan an event uniting communities like no other event during the year.  As custodians of domestic and international collaborations; our objective is, “Organize and Advocate for Awareness, Assistance and Change.”

Hassan Hathout Fast-a-thon w/ USC's Muslim Student Union and Ansar Service Partnership

On November 3, 2010 USC's academic good will ambassadors, Muslim Student Union and the Ansar Service Partnership; held the Hassan Hathout Fast-a-thon. Both Muslim and Non Muslim,faculty members, students and parents all observed patience from sunrise to sunset in unity; some for the first time. Ending the day at Masjid Omar Ibn Al Khattab in Los Angeles with breaking the fast with a healthy snack, salat (prayer) and a banquet dinner. In Association with the Hassan Hathout Foundation, the organizations were able to bridge American cultures and bring awareness to Los Angeles homeless problem. The group and its participants were able to fund raise a gift presented to local organization ILM Foundation, founders of Humanitarian Day; a direct service program for homelessness.

The ILM Foundation's mission for Humanitarian Day is, "Convert One Day into a Life's Mission" would like to thank USC's Muslim Student Union and Ansar Service Partnership and the event sponsors; The USC Office of Religious Life, USC Interfaith Council and Omar Ibn Al Khattab for its combined leadership and consideration of their community.

Muslims, 10 Years of Organizing Charity Interfaith Events

Humanitarian Day 2010 – Since 2000 the Los Angeles Muslim Community under the banner “Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity (CPHD)” have been able to successfully reflect true Islamic principles around social/ civic duties by engaging America’s domestic problems. Collectively organizing of supporting resources; both intra and interfaith organizations for effective collaborations that serves the homeless with “Dignity, Love and Respect.” On Sunday September 5th in Downtown Los Angeles; the ILM Foundation and the CPHD will host its 10th Annual Humanitarian Day (HD) a health fair for the homeless, jobless and uninsured.

Since 2000, founding organization ILM Foundation has organized events serving the needy, where line items are distributed such as; hygiene kits, warm meals, clothing and medical services by the Umma Community Clinic; all are administered and given free of charge. Over the past 10 years HD has been hosted in over 20 cities nationwide serving a collective count of 60, 000 people and have accounted for nearly 20, 000 volunteers participated. International efforts covering African countries such as; Ghana and Indonesia with annual events, will soon add more sites. “Convert One Day into a Life’s Mission” is the CPHD’s intention of developing a universal system of direct social services which will include job training, health care and education services.

Humanitarian Day will also be hosted in Oakland, California; Santa Ana in Orange County, the Inland Empire and Long Beach are all scheduled for events this Ramadan; the first starting right before fasting days with Baltimore, Maryland on August 7th. A Humanitarian Day event is “Faith in Action” counteracting negative stereotypes of Muslims in America. It is a faith filled action for American citizens; practiced along with leading interfaith organizations and communities for a great, but much needed cause.

Muslims and Jews working together, huh?

The Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity welcomes NewGround fellow, Maya Barron, as Jewish Outreach Coordinator for Humanitarian Day (HD) 2010. HD are yearly health care events held in Southern California for Los Angeles homeless and under served communities. The ILM Foundation is excited and humbled to work alongside NewGround’s leadership increasing Jewish-Muslim relations here in Los Angeles. Over the past 10 years, this is a confirmation of HD’s statements “Faith into Action and Convert One Day into a Life’s Mission” and we look forward to establish even more healthy relationships inside the interfaith community.

NewGround a Muslim-Jewish Dialog coordinated by Progressive Jewish Alliance and Muslim Public Affairs Council; directed by Azizah Hasan (MPAC) and Malka Haya Fenyvesi (PJA). This dialog fits the social model of Humanitarian Day's interfaith outreach and signifies progress along the lines of collaboration and networking with valuable Los Angeles and national organizations. Humanitarian Day is scheduled for Sunday September 5, 2010 Downtown Los Angeles, celebrating its 10th year serving the people in Councilwoman Jan Perry's district.

Humanitarian Day 3rd Year in Orange County

The Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity has created special relationships through Humanitarian Day (HD) events; both Muslim and Interfaith communities. Since its conception, HD has countered the negative public identity of Muslim Americans post 9/11 and established a character reflecting; a religious obligation of charitable good will for mankind. Not just HD, but along with coalition partners of various organizations; are all in pursuit of expressing a combined Muslim narrative of valuable historic contributions. Humanitarian Day will continue the work of preserving dignity.

On Friday April 16, 2009 the Orange County Islamic Foundation met with ILM Foundation, HD founders, to discuss plans for the 3rd Annual Humanitarian Day in Orange County. In a 2006 report Orange County has just over 35,000 people who have experienced homelessness, this annual event normally held in OC's Santa Ana Civic Center is making a positive impact upon the people of Orange County.

"2010 Marks 10 Years of Service!" In a decade together we have served 27 U.S. domestic cities, providing for nearly 60,000 people with close to 20,000 dedicated volunteers. An accomplishment only our Creator has provided, for it is He that grows our model of Social Empowerment Educational Development (SEED™).

Southern Californian cities has the largest count of homelessness in United States, and HD will continue serving such locations as; Downtown Los Angeles Skid Row (10th year), South Central (3rd year), Long Beach and Pasadena (2nd year) areas.

Humanitarian Day an event reflecting the conscience of moral humanity in providing necessary materials and medical attention, most people take for granted. We are greatly humbled to have made it this far, serving and preserving the character of sincere and dedicated people. We have two words for everyone "THANK YOU".

HUMANITARIAN DAY GHANA ASSIST NEEDY PERSONS IN MAMBOI, GHANA

Coordinators of Humanitarian Day Ghana was ILM Foundation and Bureau for Social Services (BSS), non-governmental organization based in Mamobi a suburb of Accra. This year effort focused on providing food and cash assistance to those disabled, blind, destitute, orphans, students, widows, and divorcees with children, seniors and sick (one in particular suffering from kidney-related problem). For the past two years Humanitarian Day Ghana provided over 400 breast screening, community Ramadan Iftars, educational scholarshp and cash stipens. The recipient of the largest part of the assistance was an undergraduate student pursing Islamic studies in Libya, who received funds to facilitate his homecoming to reunite with his family after almost three years.

Although there has been a substantial overall decline in the incidence of poverty in Ghana poverty still has a firm grip on rural areas, especially in the north. About 51 per cent of the poor people in Ghana live in rural areas. Poor rural people have limited access to basic social services, safe water, all-year roads, electricity and telephone services. Women are deeply affected. More than half of the women who are heads of households in rural areas are among the poorest 20 per cent of the population. Women bear heavy workloads. They are responsible for 55 to 60 per cent of agricultural production. With the above facts the Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity, as social network of volunteers, sponsors and organization committed to establish Humanitarian Day projects in America and abroad, will began to move support beyond the urban areas of Ghana into these much neglected rural areas. This year the Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity (CPHD) reached new limits, in terms of spirit of volunteers and the respect earned from the Downtown Los Angeles Skid Row homeless community. Bright balloons lined the entrance way to line items of water, new clothes, hygiene kits, hot meals and more.

The CPHD is volunteers, organizations and institutions who collectively share resources to plan Humanitarian Day Projects (HDP). Since 2001, HDP has served over 60,000 people in over 21 states domestically and 4 African countries. Working to serve displaced American citizens of various backgrounds regardless of religion and/ or status, the CPHD mission is to "Convert One Day into a Life's Mission" by putting Faith into Action.

AMHP volunteers organize Health Screening at Humanitarian Day in Inland Empire of southern CA

(Ontario, California) Humanitarian Day, a day dedicated to serve the homeless, was a tremendous success this past Saturday. Despite the overwhelming heat and long weekend, over fifty volunteers dedicated their time and energy towards serving the homeless at the Mercy House, a homeless shelter located in Ontario, CA.

Humanitarian Day has developed into an international phenomenon thanks to the efforts of people like Umar Hakim, a long time organizer of Humanitarian Day. Hakim explained that Humanitarian Day is the result of a social network of volunteers, organizations and institutions that share resources to plan such projects. This network is organized by The Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity.

American Muslim Health Professionals (AMHP) had the honor of participating in Humanitarian Day this weekend. AMHP members worked with the Shifa Free Clinic of San Bernadino to organize a large scale health screening. With the effort of about fifteen volunteers stationed at seven booths it was possible to conduct body mass index, blood sugar, blood pressure and vision testing. Additionally, experts in health care including dentists, nutritionists, pharmacists, and Shifa Free Clinic Physicians provided counseling sessions to the participants. Those individuals in need of further care were referred to the Shifa Clinic for free services.

The event was a great success for both the volunteers and participants. Almost 200 people were able to benefit from the services provided at Humanitarian Day. The volunteers’ commitment to making this event a success is best summarized by Iyad Afalqa, the AMHP lead coordinator. Afalqa stated that “This is really when one can relate to what it means to be needy. Today we execute or spiritual strength of Ramadan into physical action and also experience the plight of the needy.”

AMHP is pleased that the event was a success but understands that there is much more work to be done to alleviate the plight of the disenfranchised. Dr. Faisal Qazi, the President of AMHP, commented that “Such opportunities to serve those that are living in the most dire circumstances can never be frequent enough, but while we must continue to provide direct charitable services, we should also strive to make systematic changes in our social settings to benefit those in need.” Dr. Qazi hopes to further AMHP’s commitment to improving access to health care through participating in more projects of this nature. Thus far AMHP has helped organize and participated in nine service projects and four educational forums on health reform as part of the United We Serve Campaign. President Obama initiated this Campaign to call upon all Americans to engage in public services.

It is important to harness the efforts of all those that can donate their time, energy, and/or resources in order to truly accomplish the goals of projects like Humanitarian Day. Naim Shah, the founder of ILM Foundation and a pioneer of the Humanitarian Day project, reminds us that "Reward is granted each of us for good ideas and intentions, but a greater reward is reserved for those who are permitted by God to carry them out in to action."

“United We Serve” H-Day is answering President Obama’s Initiative

(Los Angeles 8/12/09) Humanitarian Day (H-Day) a domestic project, which addresses American social issues such as; homelessness, hunger and education directly affecting over 600,000 Americans (endhomelessness.org). The ILM Foundation under the banner of Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity (CPHD) has scheduled 7 national cities and 2 international countries for H-Day events. On Saturday August 15th at University of Southern California (USC) 1:30pm in the Waite Phillips Building; a conference will be held discussing strategy and the obligation of duty from a moral perspective.

Executive Director Naim Shah Jr. CPA says, “We are taking active responsibility for our communities, especially during this economic hardship.” H-Day originated in Los Angeles 9th District Skid Row by providing hot meals, new clothing and medical screening. The mission of H-Day “Convert One Day into a Life’s Mission” is developing an untraditional partnership with those less fortunate to alleviate hunger, homelessness and restore their self worth.

H-Day is answering President Obama’s “United We Serve” initiative with the Humanitarian Day Campaign of serving 10,000 homeless during the month of Ramadan. ILM Foundation is urging organization to join the Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity which has served nearly 60,000 men - women and children in over 21 U.S. cities since its start in 2001. H-Day’s will respond to assisting the American public in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Texas, Kansas City; as well in Ghana and Indonesia and other domestic sites. Domestic Homeless Awareness Campaign starts in June for Humanitarian Day

Los Angeles June 2009 – The month of June will begin community awareness and education about homelessness in Southern California, regarding its estimated over 68,000 homeless people in Los Angeles County. Several organizations are planning to service the Los Angeles, Long Beach, Inland Empire and Orange County in the month of Ramadan with Humanitarian Day (HD).

Founders and organizer, ILM Foundation whose mission is, “Teaching Life Skills to Replace Social Ills”, will coordinate with community partners for Skid Row’s 10th Annual Humanitarian Day. HD’s domestic events service communities every Ramadan with tangible items, food, hygiene products and medical screenings. “Preserving human dignity is our main service” says Naim Shah Jr, ILM Foundation’s Executive Director. He further states, “Education is very important informing the people will hopefully stimulate more activities in assisting our local governments with this problem.”
The Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity (CPHD) coordinators will include Project Uplift in the Inland Empire, South Central’s Bilal Learning Center, Los Angeles Umma Clinic, Masjid Al Shareef in Long Beach, the Muslim community of Orange County for Santa Ana and Ar Raazaq Food Pantry in Kansas City. These organizations have a domestic concern about issues that affect their communities and will utilize resources in helping it.

Humanitarian Day was founded and established in Los Angeles 9th District and HD has been held in 21 cities across the United States since 2001 servicing over 70,000 people. Two African countries; Ghana and Indonesia have also established HD’s mission to “Convert One Day into a Life’s Mission” and with the help of more sponsoring organizations HD will continue to provide good will found within its service.

Go BEyond The G.A.M.E. is Back!

ILM Foundation is excited to announce the return of the Go Beyond The G.A.M.E. (GBG) All City Football Camp. The camp is entering its ninth year, serving hundreds of students annually and nearly 1,000 since its founding. GBG during that time established several institutional relationships with Santa Monica and Long Beach City College, Stop the Violence Increase the Peace Foundation, UMMA Community Clinic, Dorsey High School, several pop Warner leagues and recently West Adams High School and Los Angeles Southwest College.

The beautiful site for the 2009 GBG Camp is West Adams Preparatory High School, 1500 W. Washington Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90007. It will take place on, Saturday, June 20, 2009. The cost is only $20.00 and registration will began at 8:00 am. Campers will receive a lunch, tee shirt or jersey, other gift items, professional athletic training. The camp coaches will be all current and former college and professional athletes. Community and Academic leaders will be offering student athlete and parent workshops. The UMMA Community Clinic will also provide free medical examinations.

The GBG camp is unique, because the goal is not to just to teach your child excellent athletic techniques. Our goal is to introduce fundamental skills they can use to make better life decisions on and off the field. Many of our campers are in college and a few in the NFL.
